ZAKA’s Divers Unit is a nationwide network of highly trained volunteers equipped to respond immediately when individuals go missing at sea. These dedicated professionals—navy graduates, doctors, lawyers, and economists alike—embody ZAKA’s commitment to the sanctity of life, volunteerism, and professionalism in rescue operations. Each year, they respond to dozens of missing-person events, searching beneath the surface where standard rescue teams often cannot reach.

Origins and Mission

The impetus for forming the Divers Unit arose during the 2005 search for Attorney Moshe Kaniel, who drowned off the coast of Tel Aviv. Despite hundreds of volunteers scouring the shoreline on foot, and aircraft searching from above, the ocean depths remained inaccessible. Recognizing the urgent need for underwater specialists, ZAKA established the new diving team within 30 days of discovering Mr. Kaniel’s body, naming it in his honor. Ever since, these divers have given families the answers and closure they need, while fulfilling the highest form of community service.
