Chesed Shel Emes embodies the highest form of altruism: honoring those who can no longer speak for themselves and ensuring they receive a proper Jewish burial. This unitโs compassionate workโoften performed amid the most emotionally trying circumstancesโreflects ZAKAโs unwavering commitment to our core values: sanctity of life, professionalism in rescue and recovery, volunteerism, unity, and the deep respect owed to every individual, both in life and in death.
ZAKA Chesed Shel Emes volunteers are rigorously trained in the meticulous handling and identification of the deceased, whether following a traffic accident, terror attack, murder, suicide, or natural disaster. Acting under the authorization of the Israel Police, they collect blood and body parts at the scene to preserve the dignity of the departed. Their expertise spans forensic procedures, Jewish burial law, and the latest body-identification techniquesโalways ensuring the highest standards of respect and care.
This work not only brings closure to grieving families but also fulfills a sacred mitzvah: caring for the deceased with no expectation of gratitude in return. By respecting and honoring those who have passed on, ZAKA reaffirms the sanctity of life even in death, uniting communities at home and across the globe. Indeed, our Chesed Shel Emes volunteers also deploy worldwideโresponding to mass casualty incidents and helping repatriate loved ones when families face obstacles overseas.
All of ZAKAโs specialized units, including Chesed Shel Emes, operate solely through the generosity of caring individuals around the world.
